3. Tax day used to be in march

Well, you should know that federal tax returns were not always due April 15. The filing deadline for Americans was March 1 in 1913 which was actually the first year of a federal income tax. However, it was changed to March 15 in 1918 and again to the now familiar April 15  in 1955.

You should take into consideration that this year the Tax Day is now July 15, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

4. Withholding started because of a cash crisis

As you probably know, back in the 1940s, the U.S. government needed a steady cash flow in order to fund the war effort.

It passed the Current Tax Payment Act of 1943, which required companies to withhold income taxes from their employees’ paychecks and make ongoing payments on their employees’ behalf. Before this, American workers paid income taxes quarterly or annually.
