Happy July… 2nd?
Contrary to popular beliefs, the Declaration of Independence was in fact approved on July 2d, 1776. John Adams, the future second U.S. president, declared the date as a day of celebration:
“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.”
Well, his plans were a bit delayed as a revised version of the Declaration was signed two days later, on July 4th. The date remained set ever since.
