Medicare Doesn’t Cover Most Dental Care

There are many things you should be happy about during retirement and showing off a perfect row of pearly whites is the perfect way of letting the world know that everything is going according to plan!

Except now you have one less reason to smile since Medicare doesn’t cover most dental care. Routine dental visits, fillings, teeth cleaning, most tooth extractions, and dentures do not fall under the scope of your coverage. Medicare Advantage does, however, cover x rays and basic cleanings, just keep in mind that these plans have an annual coverage cap of about $1,500.

There are two things you can do to ensure your dental care will be covered during retirement. You could either build money up in health savings account before you enroll in Medicare, get coverage from a separate insurance policy, or a dental discount.

With health savings accounts you can use the money tax -free for dental, medical, and other out-of-pocket costs at any age. Just keep in mind that you will no longer be able to contribute to one after you sign up for Medicare, so start saving well before retirement.
