5. Increased standard deduction
If a family member is blind, he or she can qualify for an increased standard deduction on his/her tax return. For single filers, the standard deduction is $12,400, but for blind single filers, the same deduction goes up to $14,050 (a $1,650 increase).
However, if he/she is not totally blind, Uncle Sam will most likely require a certified statement from an ophthalmologist that mentions he/she has a non-correctable 20/200 vision or that his/her field of vision is restricted to less than 20 degrees.
