CreditCards.com puts the average foreign transaction fee at 1 to 3 percent, which isn’t always so slight, depending on the traveler. “It’s not uncommon for them to go up to 5 percent per transaction,” Lowery says. “If you come home and it’s cost you 5 percent plus whatever the conversion is, it can put kind of a damper on that post-vacation glow.”
