9. Deduction of Medical Home Improvements

If you make any adjustments or improvements to your house for medical purposes, you will most likely qualify for a medical expense deduction. Examples of medical upgrades to your home include building ramps, installing handrails, moving electrical outlets, widening doorways, installing elevators, or lowering cabinets.

All these are deductible as medical expenses. However, there are certain limitations. In order to claim the deduction, you’ll have to itemize on Schedule A, Form 1040, and you can actually deduct the medical expenses that exceed 10 percent of your AGI.

And, again, the improvements must be only for medical reasons. If not, don’t expect to get any deductions.
