5. Forgetting to include all sources of income

A certified public accountant, Ted Kleinman, says that most taxpayers forget to include all their income sources on their tax returns. This usually applies to gains obtained from independent-contracting work (freelancers, for instance).

When a company or a person contracts you for your services, they must give you a Form 1099 on which you must include the amount of money you’ve received. Failing to do so will cost you dearly. Kleinman added that Uncle Sam could easily detect if you lied on your return. As a consequence, he will most likely audit you.
