If you turned 72 in 2021 and you DIDN’T take a required minimum distribution last year, then this concerns you. If you didn’t know this by now, when you turn 72 years old, you start taking distributions from tax-deferred retirement savings accounts.
However, if you are a first-timer you can wait until April 1st of the year after your 72nd birthday to take the initial RMD. After that, the official deadline for taking RMDs is December 31st.
Be aware that if you delay taking your first RMD, you have to take a second distribution, but in the same year. As a result that will boost your total taxable income.
