#4 Question: Am I actually considered married for the entire year if I get married on Dec. 31?
Answer: YES
Although your marriage certificate probably says otherwise, when it comes to taxes, the government sees you married (and happy) for the entire year. So, even if you actually married on Dec. 31, in Uncle Sam’s opinion, you’re married for the entire year.
It sounds crazy, we know, but that’s how the IRS gets things done. They determine your filing status on literally the last day of the year. So, if you, for whatever reason, decide to get married on Dec. 31, you’re considered married for virtually the entire year.
