3. Gift Card Scams

If you think that getting gift cards is a good idea, think again. A website operated by the National Consumers League states that there’s a spike in fraud when it comes to gift cards. But how did they manage to get the numbers from the gift cards?

Well, they know the code of a gift card while it is still hanging on the store shelf. If you’re unfortunate enough to get that gift card, you will most likely be scammed. In other words, when the card is activated, the scammer gets all the money.

However, we are not suggesting you avoid getting gift cards for your friends and family, but it’s best to check if they are properly stored and placed in a secure packaging that prevents the thief from getting the numbers. Do not buy gift cards that are crooked, scratched, or that do not have a foil covering.

  1. Another scam is a call telling you your computer has a virus and they can get rid of it for you when indeed they are putting the virus in and charging you big bucks to get rid of it, then later calling you telling you they can’t fix it and is going to return your money. Instead they wind up taking more money.
