7. Romance Scams

You’re divorced, and you want to get back into the dating scene? Well, don’t forget about romance scams! Dating sites are full of scammers who cannot wait to say that you are the love of their lives. Sadly, retirees are targeted more and more by romance scammers.

In the beginning, everything seems heavenly, and just when you thought that you finally found the perfect match, the scammer starts asking for things. The first red flag of a romance scam is when the ‘love of your life’ asks for money to get a plane ticket so he/she can see you.

Once the money is wired, the romance scammer starts making excuses to delay the trip. The scammer may also claim that there’s an emergency in his/her family that involves a certain amount of money. Think about a car accident or a medical emergency.

All of these are red flags! According to Stokes, “people lose thousands and thousands of dollars because of these romance scams.”

  1. Another scam is a call telling you your computer has a virus and they can get rid of it for you when indeed they are putting the virus in and charging you big bucks to get rid of it, then later calling you telling you they can’t fix it and is going to return your money. Instead they wind up taking more money.
