5. Know your rights with regards to your medical records
Your medical records are crucial for a lot of reasons. For instance, they provide specific information regarding our health when we are unable to give it, saving our lives in difficult and unclear situations. However, you should know that HIPAA, namely the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act protects your privacy rights regarding your medical records.
Even if most people assume that their doctors aren’t allowed to give them their medical records, this is not true. According to HIPPA, your doctor must give you a copy of your medical records when you need it (however, you have the right to request your medical records in certain circumstances). Plus, the copy must be provided to you within 30 days.
