8 Important Documents You Should NEVER Throw Away

1. Personal papers

So, birth certificates, military records, social security cards, marriage licenses, identification cards, and divorce decrees should definitely be kept safe. For example, you need certain personal papers to get a passport and driver’s license. Make copies of every single personal paper and place the original ones in a safe location.

2. Bank account records

Keep your bank account records as long as possible! When referring to canceled checks and receipts, store them in a binder until account statements are actually received and reconciled. After receiving the account statements, you can only keep the checks and receipts that are proofs of a big purchase and, of course, those that are tax related.

Next, you know they always say ‘follow the money’…..

  1. I wish I would have kept my 1988 tax forms because Social Security went back 31 years when I applied for disability and was granted in 2019. Since I couldn’t prove I made the amount that was on Social Security Statement for that year by not saving that years paperwork, Social Security cut that amount in half which affects my monthly disability payments. IRS doesn’t keep records for that long either
So I suggest people should save their tax records till death then family members can dispose of them then.
