4. Living will

If you want peace of mind during the last years of your life, a living will could help you. A living will is actually a legal document that provides clarity for your family members. Everything will be mentioned there, including your personal choices and your medical treatment.

However, do not confuse your living will with a POA. The latter appoints a medical representative in case you’re dealing with a life-threatening health issue, while a living will can’t. It is also different from your last will because your last will explains how you actually want your assets to be handled when you’re gone.

Note that a form that includes a health care power of attorney and a living will called “Five Wishes” is available in 44 states, plus the District of Columbia. Talk to your lawyer to find out what’s best for you and your family.
