In an attempt to keep their money safe, most Americans are tempted to reach out to their plastics instead of paying with cash. While there are many disadvantages when paying with cash, such as security, credit cards are no good either. At least not when referring to certain purchases.
Your credit card is not the best form of payment, especially when you’re struggling with debt. Fortunately, if you’re facing a ton of debt, you can still keep your finances safe and avoid adding more debt by steering clear of the following credit card purchases.

These suggestions are good if a consumer has a habit of keeping balance. I pay for the balance every month so I cannot give up use of credit card because it is automatically 2% back as travel money. I charge HOA fees; $14.95 fee is less than 2%, rebate if I pay at least quarterly. Some utilities will encourage credit cards, then I pay from my checking accounts.
A also try to keep 6 months’ living expenses in my cash account, too. Amazon’c 5% back is also beneficial, so is Costco’s citi cards. I have to make sure the balance is within my means It is all about managing the money.
Wholeheartedly agree. Why forgo the “ cash back” from using the card if I will pay it all at the end of the month? It is certainly about managing one’s money.
Never purchase tobacco, liquor, cbd, or similar products using plastic. Always use cash. Big brother watches plastic purchases…
Good advice
There are credit cards that give you rewards for purchases on your card. If your planning on paying off your balance at the end of the month then using your card can be beneficial.
Never purchase liquor, tobacco, or other “sin items” etc. with credit card or any plastic. Plastic transactions are traceable. Government agencies snoop. Pay cash for those, if you don’t have the cash, go to the ATM first.
This is not true since if you have the cash to purchase a car in the first place then put the maximum amount of money on the card and after paying when the credit card bill arrives you will get the points/miles and perhaps a cash bonus which will reduce the car purchase.
There’s not much left to use a credit card for so I guess I don’t need one. I’ll just close the account.
Good Article and good points. However, NOW, IN 2024, MANY Credit Cards are charging HIGH INTEREST RATES, LIKE 28% – 31% INTEREST! So, if you can pay it off DO! If not, don’t use it, or use it as little as possible! Instead, try to pay with cash or a debit card, BUT DO NOT USE YOUR pen # at any store! Is it easy? NO. But, if you spend $500 in 1 month, with a 30% Interest rate, soon that bill will be costing you $100 a month or more in interest alone. It’s a nightmare and hard to beat unless you make multiple payments. Check your credit card interest rate and if it is higher than 20%, put it in a folder and do not use it. Call the customer service # on the back of the card and ask why the interest rate is high. Especially if you don’t miss payments and are not late. You can file a complaint and tell them they are gouging you, if nothing is done, there are other options you can do.
Good Luck
I use a loadable visa type gift card for certain online purchases if I’m unfamiliar with a company. This protects me from credit card fraud.
Isn’t there a service or health care credit card specifically designed to pay medical bills? This would solve this problem.
I also never carry a CC balance. Very few people carry enough cash and checks are becoming obsolete. Thank you.
Where is Next?
This info is basic and common sense. Nothing new here.
i pay for everything with my credit card and get 2 to 3% rewards cash credit to my card. i pay off the charges as soon as they post, i don’t even wait for an end of month statement. for online purchases, i use a virtual card number.
I have medical bills, 2 storage units with 4 balloon annual payments, a PO box and now a cell phone I can’t afford. I do not have a choice unless I get rid of everything then I will have nothing.
Never put any tobacco or liquor purchase on a credit card…always pay this in CASH…
Others don’t need to know your business…
Never buy tobacco, liquor, or similar products with plastic…always pay cash…big brother doesn’t need to know you use this stuff…
Wish I knew how to check if a company is reputable or not, but I don`t.
I absolutely hate it when the come-on line to an article refuses to list what it promises to tell you within the first paragraph. People get tired of wading through how you found your answer and all the interviews before maybe getting to the object of the article. I think that soon folks will just end up ignoring the come-on and not buy what you’re selling.
If you could actually see what purchases to avoid- I’d have read it. But clicking ad after ad after ad…. I’ll pass.
