Being a Performing Artist
We know, it’s quite an odd tax break, but yes, you can deduct all business expenses related to your artistic work. This is actually an “above the line” tax break. However, before displaying your happy dance, here’s what you should consider:
- You must have at least 2 employers and each of them actually has to pay you a minimum of $200.
- All of your expenses have to stay at least 10 percent of what you earn as an artist.
- Your adjusted gross income (AGI) can’t be more than $16,000.
And if you thought that you can file with your spouse to solve the previous issue, even if you’re married, your AGI still can’t be more than $16,000.
