Do Men and Women Receive Different Benefit Amounts?
There is no rule that states that women and men should receive different benefit amounts just because they’re, well… men and women. After all, that would be discriminatory.
The truth is that if a man and a woman have identical earning histories, they will receive the same amount in benefits.
As we mentioned earlier, the true problem between the gap is a societal one. A recent study conducted by PayScale found that women are earning 81 cents for every dollar a man makes. Over a 40 year career, the difference translates for around $900,000 in losses, but that’s not even considering the potential interest that sort of money could have accrued.
So if you thought men receive bigger benefits you’re not necessarily wrong, but the reasons behind that are due to how men and women are paid differently, not due to how benefits are calculated for the different sexes.
