10. You claimed the Earned Income Credit
The Earned Income Credit (EIC) is a refundable tax credit that’s planned to benefit low to moderate income workers and their own families. Asking for this type of credit can actually minimize the amount of tax you owe and maximize your refund.
There’s a trick though: you should be aware that it may take longer to get your refund if you claim this refundable tax credit. Also, because of the big number of taxpayers who fraudulently claim the EIC, the Internal Revenue Service pays special attention to returns that have it.
So, if you’re claiming the EIC for the first time, the IRS will want to make sure that all the information you’ve provided is correct before releasing your refund.
