Even if it seems like a great idea to opt for an extended warranty in the first place, from a consumer’s perspective, this type of insurance policy is rarely used, especially when it comes to small items such as DVD players and radios. If you buy a reputable, brand-name product, you can be sure it will work as designed and that the extended warranty is likely to be useless.

However, if you decide to spend $7,000 on a big, flat-screen television, the policy is still unlikely to pay off, but might make you feel better. But, for everything else (kitchen appliances, bathroom gadgets or basic household appliances), forget about the extended warranty—it’s not worth the money.
