6. Undocumented immigrants drain Social Security

This is also incorrect! There are a lot of noncitizens who live and work in the US legally, and that means they are eligible for Social Security exactly like any of us. It has been proven that undocumented workers actually improve Social Security’s bottom line! Statistics show that immigrants made a net contribution of almost $12 billion to the program in 2010.

7. An ex-spouse’s benefits comes out of your own

If you are divorced, your former spouse may be eligible to collect Social Security benefits on your record and vice versa. That’s the law, but those benefits won’t reduce your Social Security. You will get the benefit you’re entitled to based on your contributions and earnings history when you file for this system. This is a common myth, and most people are afraid of it.

Keep in mind that your benefit will be reduced by $1 for every $2 of income above $19,560 if you don’t reach the retirement age in 2022. If you find this article interesting, you may want to read this one: 13 Laws That Make America a Better Place.
