When you sign up for your 401(k) plan you’ll probably receive written information about investments and might be given a representative to help you understand how the plan works. However, if you want real help planning your retirement, you’ll probably have to work with your own financial advisor or do things yourself.

A 401(k) plan is, for the most part, a self-managed investment plan. You’ll have access to information about your account through your employer’s 401(k) website, but you’ll have to pull the trigger yourself when it comes to allocating your investments.
