Playing Bass
Well, OK, the IRS might think everything through but that doesn’t mean they’re always right. Just ask the Tax Court.
A bass player and music professor traveled to different performances and jazz rehearsals in order to play with other well-known musicians and to keep his skills sharp. He then decided to deduct his travel expenses, but the IRA disagreed with him.
However, in Tax Court, he explained that since he passed down everything he learned to his students, traveling for those events should still be considered as part of his teaching duties. The courts agreed with him, too!
