Documents You Didn’t Know You Need for Your Taxes

First things first, you need your Personal Documents, which means you should have with you:

• Your photo ID

• The birth dates for you, your spouse, or any other dependents on the tax return

• Your Social Security cards for your spouse, or any other dependents on the tax return

• Your Social Security Number verification letters for your spouse, or any other dependents on the tax return

• Your bank account and routing number

• Your 2019 and 2020 tax return

The list is a little bit longer when it comes to the Income documents that you should bring along, and it depends on your current income situation such as:

Employment income: 

• Completed W-2 forms for all the jobs you had last year

Self-employment income: 

• 1099-NEC and/or 1099-K

• All the records of expenses that you have

• The records of estimated tax payments

• Receipts, financial statements, and so on

Retirement income: 

• You have to fill in the SSA-1099 form for Social Security Benefits

• And the 1099-R for pension, IRA, or annuity income

Unemployment income: 

• In case you’re unemployed, you should fill in the 1099-G form for unemployment benefits

Alternative sources of income: 

• the 1099-R form if you receive disability income

• the 1099-G form for refund of state or local income taxes

• the 1098-T form if you receive scholarships or fellowships

• if you receive alimony

• statements for lottery or gambling winnings

• statement for any prizes you have received

• statements from banks regarding interests and dividends

• income from rental properties

• income coming from the sale of stocks, real estate, or bonds
