3. In 1951, the CIA spiked French bread with enormous quantities of LSD as an experiment on the human minds. The small town of Pont-Saint-Esprit went completely off the rails for a while: one man tried to drown himself, an 11-year-old almost strangled his grandmother and another local shouted ‘I am a plane’ before jumping out of a second-floor window and breaking both of his legs.
It wasn’t until 1975 that a White House document revealed that certain French Nationals were paid by the CIA to make the event possible.
