1. Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants
In 1994, 79-year-old Stella Liebeck bought a coffee from McDonald’s and was enjoying it while driving her car. What seemed to be like a normal day for the woman ended in a nightmare.
She spilled her hot coffee on her lap causing third-degree burns and an eight days stay in the hospital while also going through skin grafting.
She filed an infamous and long debated lawsuit which will later be known as Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants.
The jury rewarded the victim with more than $2 million, however the judge reduced it to $640,000. Both parties settled before making the decision to appeal.
