Outliving the Social Security Trust Fund

Your Social Security benefits will surely take a hit if you outlive the program’s trust fund. According to the 2019 Trustees Report, the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund — which pays out Social Security retirement benefits — and the Disability Insurance Trust Fund will run out of cash in 2035.

The retirement of the largest generation in U.S. history, the baby boom generation, is challenging the system as the cost of those workers’ benefits grows faster than the working-age population paying into the system.

After 2035, the program will only have enough income from employed workers to pay 75% of Social Security benefits by 2093, the report notes.
