11. Serve jail time
The scariest and worst possible scenario is serving jail time for filing fraudulent tax returns or for failing to file on purpose. If the government thinks you’ve failed to file your tax returns on purpose or, even worse, filed fraudulent returns, you could be behind bars for several years.
Uncle Sam has said many times before that individuals who tend to keep ‘secrets’ from him, especially those who have ‘a pattern of wrongdoing’ and willfully attempting to defraud him, could serve jail time.
