According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), law enforcement describes the individuals and agencies responsible for enforcing laws and maintaining public order and public safety. So, the umbrella term law enforcement means the prevention, detection, and investigation of crime, and the apprehension and detention of those individuals who are suspected of law violation.

A police officer (policeman or policewoman) is a warranted law employee of a police force, who applies the law by doing a lot of things such as detecting crimes and arresting criminals. Basically, officers work in partnership with the public in order to minimize crime and enforce federal, state, and local laws.

Due to the raising crime rates in our country, we needs more police officers to maintain the public order, especially when we are referring to states like Louisiana, California and Missouri which have the highest crime rates.
