Waiting Until 70 To Collect Spousal Benefits

If you are the primary beneficiary, then sure you can delay taking benefits until you’re 70 in order to see an increase in cash flow. But if you are not and if you are claiming your spouse’s benefits then you should know that it does not make sense to wait until you’re 70. People who do this will not get extra credits, so there’s no incentive to wait.

The only thing that will happen if you do wait is that you’ll miss out on years you could have been collecting benefits.

The maximum amount you can receive is 50% of your spouse’s benefits when you reach full retirement age, no more. So then why wait any longer anyway?

Oh and also, if your full retirement age is 67 and you decide to start receiving your spouse’s benefits when you turn 62, you’ll only get around 32.5% instead.
