8. Forgetting to sign your return
Yes, you got everything right on your tax return, but if you actually forget to sign it, it’s in vain. According to Uncle Sam, an unsigned tax return is literally the same as an unsigned check… IT’S NOT VALID! And if you’re married and only you signed the return, it’s useless too. Both of you have to sign the tax return.
In case you file electronically, rest assured. The taxman will give you a personal (and unique) identification number like a PIN that replaces your signature. Once it needs ‘the signature,’ the system will ask you to enter your identification number (PIN), so you can finally file the return.
