7. Social Security numbers

Some Americans think they won’t get their third stimulus payment because they don’t have a Social Security number. But as Mark Twain once said that “a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes…” And although most lies have a kernel of truth, you don’t need to have a Social Security number to enjoy the payment.

Generally, it’s easier to get the payment if you have a Social Security number, but there are also some exceptions. For example, an adopted dependent can use an adoption taxpayer identification number to receive the third stimulus check.

Married couples who are part of the U.S. armed forces can also get the payment if only one spouse has a Social Security number. And your spouse can still get the third payment if you have a Social Security number. See? You don’t need to have a Social Security number to receive the payment.
