GlaxoSmithKline

$3 billion

Ever heard of GlaxoSmithKline? (I bet you did!) The pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline pled guilty to misdemeanor criminal charges back in 2012. The company was found guilty of promoting some drugs by forcing doctors across the country to prescribe them to their patients.

The pharmaceutical company even started distributing a misleading medical journal article in order to “promote” some of its drugs. Two out of three billion dollars were paid in civil charges, while the rest, namely $1 billion in criminal fines.

And although the prosecutors have not brought criminal charges against anyone connected with the GSK case, the agreement leaves open this possibility.
