The settlement between Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and Kerr McGee was based on fraudulent conveyance claims against Kerr-McGee Corporation and subsidiaries of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) managed to get $5.15 billion from them in order to fund environmental clean-up. It is basically the largest and the most expensive payment for the clean-up of certain areas across the country, polluted by wood creosote, rocket fuel waste, and nuclear fuel that could easily lead to various health issues, including cancer.

During a news conference, the U.S. Attorney for Manhattan, Preet Bharara, said that those who are responsible for 85 years of contaminating the earth are also responsible for cleaning it up.
