Overall Rating for Middle-Class Families: Tax-friendly

Louisiana’s state sales tax is actually a 4.45 percent levy, and, again, localities can add a ton… 7 percent, to be more precise. As per the Tax Foundation stats, the average combined rate in this state is 9.52 percent. And although prescription drugs and grocery items are exempt from Louisiana’s sales tax, localities can change that.

Clothing, footwear, and motor vehicles can’t escape taxes either. Regarding income taxes… the lowest rate is 2 percent applied on $12,500 (or less) of taxable income for single filers and $25,000 for those who file jointly. The highest income rate is 6 percent on taxable income exceeding $50,000 for single filers and $100,000 for joint filers.

Overall, Louisiana has a tax-friendly picture, and one of the factors that’s responsible for that is the median property tax rate ( $534 per $100,000 of assessed home value).
