7. Check for mistakes
As a retiree, you get a Social Security statement every single year. Do not assume that your statement is accurate! You should check the numbers and, if you find some errors you should report them to the Social Security Administration as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that your Social Security benefits are based on the average of your thirty-five peak earning years. A tiny mistake for even one or two of those peak earning years could have a huge impact on your benefit for the rest of your life.
