South Carolina

While South Carolina’s wine and spirit taxes fall somewhere in the middle compared to the rest of the U.S., with $0.90 per gallon for wine and $2.72 per gallon for liquor, the same can’t be said for its beer. Here, you’ll find some of the highest taxes in the nation, with $0.77 per gallon!

That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a gold one in the Palmetto State. The family-owned COAST Brewing Co. brewery is a great place to try out beer with locally sourced ingredients- and who doesn’t love helping out locally owned businesses?

You’ve also got Palmetto Brewing Company, which helped revive brewing in the state following the dreaded Prohibition era in 1993. Their experimental brews on tap as well as their selection of small-batch brews are definitely worth the extra cost.
