Fen-Phen diet drugs
$3.8 billion
In the mid-1990s, many overweight Americans were taking fen-phen seeking an effective weight loss. The “miracle” diet pill was actually a combination of two drugs, namely fenfluramine and phentermine, just like the name suggests. And even if they did saw large numbers in sales, the financial paradise would soon be over.
Why? Because the diet pill had been associated with fatal heart valve damage. More than 6 million Americans reportedly used fen-phen before it was pulled from the pharmacies back in 1997. Chances are you took some too. After three years, in 2000, a federal judge agreed with a $3.75 billion settlement.
So based on the fen-phen users’ injuries, people had received a certain amount of money, costing American Home Products a total of $3.8 billion.
