35. Virginia

The Old Dominion has a 5.3 percent levy, but some areas in the Northern state and the Hampton Roads area will also add a 0.7 percent sales tax. Those who live in James County, York County, or Williamsburg will see an additional 1.7 percent.

The lowest income tax rate is 2 percent on up to $3,000 of taxable income, while the highest rate is 5.75 percent on more than $17,000 of taxable income. If you want to become a homeowner in Texas, note that the median property tax rate here is $814 per $100,000 of assessed home value, and there’s no estate or inheritance tax.

36. Washington

Even though municipalities can add up to 4 percent to the existing 6.5 percent state levy, Washington has virtually no income tax. So why not relocating to a cultural and historical state? Well, you might say ‘no, thank you’ due to the property taxes.

Here, the median property tax rate is $1,008 for every $100,000 of assessed home value, and estates that exceed $2.193 million will face a 20 percent tax. If you’re lucky enough to inherit a property, you should move to Washington.
