The Empire State has a 4 percent levy, but localities can change that, adding as much as 4.875 percent. If you’re living in the New York City metro area, note that you’ll see an additional 0.375% sales tax in order to support transit. Footwear and clothing are exempt from sales taxes only if the item costs less than $110.

A 4 percent tax income is imposed on up to $8,500 of taxable income for married joint filers and up to $17,150 for single filers, while the highest rate, 8.82 percent, is applied on more than $2,155,350 for those who file jointly and $1,070,550 for single filers.

The median property tax rate in New York is $1,706 per $100,000 of assessed home value, and for estates that exceed $5.85 million, residents will see a 16 percent top rate.
