The Pine Tree State may sound like a good idea for retirement, and even if it doesn’t tax your Social Security benefits, it has other taxes. For example, the sales tax rate for prepared foods is 8 percent.

Married joint filers will see a 5.8 percent income tax rate on up to $43,700, while single filers on up to $21,850. If your taxable income is higher, you could end up seeing the highest tax rate, namely 7.15 percent on more than $103,400 for those who file together and more than $51,700 for single filers.

The median property tax rate in Maine is $1,363 for every $100,000 of assessed home value. And yes, there’s no inheritance tax, but the state does impose an estate tax that can be as much as 12 percent.
