19. Massachusetts

If you’re a fashion addict, don’t move to Massachusetts! Footwear and clothing priced at more than $175 per item are taxed. The sales tax here is 6.25 percent, and luckily, localities can’t change it. The income tax rate is flat at 5.05 percent, and the median property tax translates to $1,229 for every $100,000 of assessed home value.

When it comes to estates that are valued at more than $1 million, Massachusetts imposes an estate tax that can go up to 16 percent. Still, there’s no inheritance tax.

20. Michigan

Here the sales tax is a 6 percent levy, and, luckily, there are no local sales taxes. The income tax rate is flat at 4.25 percent, but cities can also impose their own tax. For instance, Detroit imposes a tax on its residents at a 2.4 percent rate.

In the Wolverine State, the median property tax rate is $1,581 per $100,000 of assessed home value, and there’s no estate or inheritance tax.
