16. Louisiana
Planning to relocate to Louisiana in your golden years? Wonderful! Prescription drugs and groceries are all exempt from the sales tax, still, localities can change that. The state has a 4.45 percent levy, but it can go to 11.45 percent.
The lowest income tax rate is 2 percent on up to $25,000 of taxable income for those who file jointly and are married and up to $12,500 for residents who file as individuals. You’ll face a 6 percent rate if your spouse’s and your taxable income is more than $100,000, and, as a single filer, on more than $50,000.
Luckily, Louisiana residents can actually deduct their federal income tax. If you want to become a homeowner here, note that the median property tax rate here is $532 per $100,000 of assessed home value. However, there’s virtually no estate or inheritance tax.
